Why do I need to flash my phone?
All of our supported devices are shipped with unlocked bootloaders. This is a security feature that allows users to flash custom ROMs and other modifications on their own terms, without the need of waiting on an official update from the manufacturer or having to crack open their device and apply physical modifications (which even then can be risky).

Installing fastboot via Windows Command Prompt
fastboot is a command-line tool (for advanced users) that allows you to communicate with the bootloader of our Android devices and flash a variety of things onto it.

This tool is included in the android-tools directory in your SDK installation directory, which can be found at <sdk_install_directory>\platform-tools.

The easiest way to open the command prompt window there is to hold shift on your keyboard and right click on an empty space inside the SDK directory and navigate to Open Command Window Here from the context menu.

Unlocking Your Bootloader (fastboot flashing unlock)
To unlock your bootloader and root your phone, use fastboot flashing unlock , which is located in the android-tools directory as well. It is specifically designed for unlocking a locked bootloader, which will wipe eerything on your device before it’s used.

Warning: You will lose all of the data on your device! Make sure to make a backup of any important data on it first.

The process will wipe your device and unlock the bootloader. Unlocking your device will also wipe the /data partition but will not touch any other partitions such as /sdcard, /sd-ext, etc. If you’re using a custom recovery, your device may be put into a state where it won’t boot.

To fix this and get your device to boot again, you’ll have to perform a factory reset in fastboot mode by issuing the command fastboot oem lock . This will erase all data on your phone and put it into the locked state that we need.

To unlock your bootloader, run the following command from adb or Windows Command Prompt:

This will unlock your bootloader. You may see some instructions that instruct you to restart your phone for it to take effect. Do so and continue on with the rest of this guide.
